Protect Your Peace and Build Resilience This Fall 🎃

 Happy October!

As the seasons change, I’ve been thinking about how we care for ourselves during uncertain times—and how important resilience and gratitude matter right now.

A friend recently said the job market feels like the ground keeps shifting. That stuck with me. With layoffs, hiring freezes, and drawn-out interview processes, many talented professionals are facing an unpredictable and discouraging situation.

So, as we move through this season, let’s practice gentle self-compassion. Being kind to ourselves isn’t a luxury or weakness—it’s a powerful form of strength.

2 | SPOTLIGHT 💬

Your “Hard Things Folder” – A Tool for Tough Times

I recently discovered the idea of a “hard things folder”—and it’s quickly become one of my favorite resilience tools.

When life feels overwhelming (a tough job search, career pivot, or workplace challenge), we often forget how capable we are. We downplay our courage and overlook past wins. hard things folder is your personal archive of resilience. It reminds you: You’ve done hard things before. You can do them again.

Here’s how to start yours:

1) Choose your format: phone notes, a document, or a journal—whatever works best.

2) Fill it with moments when you:

  • Spoke up despite discomfort

  • Set a boundary (especially a hard one)

  • Advocated for yourself

  • Kept going when quitting felt easier

3) Revisit regularly, especially when self-doubt shows up.

This simple practice builds emotional proof of your strength—and that’s something we all need in uncertain times.

3 | PODCAST RECOMMENDATION 🎧

How to Quiet Your Inner Critic with Dr. Kristin Neff, We Do Hard Things podcast

If you need a dose of wisdom and grounding, this conversation is it.

Dr. Kristin Neff, an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, and co-founder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, shares the secret to self-compassion and how to lessen our inner critic’s voice in order to build self-worth.

A key point is self-compassion isn’t about lowering your standards or being complacent. Self-compassionate people set goals just as high as self-critical ones—but when they fall short, they see it as part of learning, not a personal failure. That mindset helps you grow faster and recover stronger.

Dr. Neff's model of self-compassion has three parts:

  • Mindfulness: Acknowledge your pain without judgment, allowing yourself to feel it without being consumed by it.

  • Self-Kindness: Treat yourself with the same warmth and understanding you'd offer a close friend going through a hard time.

  • Common Humanity: Remember that struggle and imperfection are part of being human—you're not alone in this.

You already know how to be compassionate. This is your reminder to turn it inward.

4 | COACHING REFLECTION 🤔

Many high-achieving women I coach share one thing in common: they’re incredibly hard on themselves. If that sounds familiar, try this journaling exercise from Dr. Neff, which is summarized below:

Each evening for one week, reflect on a moments you felt bad, stumbled, or criticized yourself.

For each, explore:

  • Mindfulness: What happened, and how did it feel? (without judgment)

  • Common Humanity: How might others experience something similar?

  • Self-Kindness: What would you say to a friend in this same situation?

This small habit can begin to shift your inner dialogue—and help you treat yourself with more grace.
